Josephs Well 16/12/03
The headline band (B Movie Heroes) cancel, leaving our boys to step into the breach.
Heroes my arse, couldn't even turn up for a gig. Sadly the un-named support bands set a really bad scene for the night. Crap mock drowning pool/hundred reasons soundalikes are never gonna be popular in my book, the least said the better. Her Alibi take to the stage in the face of overwhelming apathy and manage to inspire one (admittedly pissed) bloke called 'weasel' to whip the crowd into a big, fat, post-apathy frenzy. The only movers down the front were myself, my mate also called Jamie and the co-founder of primitive promotions, the lumbering behemoth known only as Andy. Unfortunately the set was a blinder, benefitting from the usual spot on mix from josephs wells resident sound man. These guys never sound as good as they do right here at their spiritual home. Set opener 'Fluoxetine' starts the (minimalist) crowd bouncing and 'sometimes illness' confirms the mood for the rest of the set. New tracks 'all in spite of you' and 'ready to burn' showcase the talent inherent in such a long standing band, refreshing tunes mixed with classics form a solid and faultless set. 'A minute wasted' is proceeded by a brief rendition of 'I believe in a thing called love' by the almighty Darkness (amid claims of 'the bastards stole that one from us!!') and followed by Sugarvalve classic 'I Beseech You' (demonstrating Del's drumming style and talent to the full) leads into the traditional closing tunes of the set 'Choke' and 'Xenophobe', a triumphant and celebrated end to a fucking awesome gig for the lads.
The encore is called for and sadly the boys decline a full on rock ballad, settling instead for a solo vocal effort from a certain drummer who shall remain nameless, and believe me, you seriously don't want to know what he sang.
